Final Reflection
Learning about social issues in Ireland helped me compare issues similar to those in America. I looked into Direct Provision and DACA and compared them. I saw how immigration policies vary from country to country and how difficult it is for immigrants to obtain the same opportunities as citizens.As an artist and activist, I have learned that no matter what country you are from, there are still issues within the political and social aspects. From education to women’s rights, these issues can be displayed in all forms of art including photography.
I learned that the Rebel City has a lot more to offer than I expected. I met amazing people with diverse life stories. I also learned about the rich history in arts that Cork has. From Monday night poetry sessions to a trip to the Crawford Art Gallery, I saw first hand how the city appreciates and supports the arts community. Free admission at a gallery is rare in the United States but in Ireland, it seemed common and practical.
Through this trip, I learned about arts as resistance by meeting individuals who use their arts and incorporate social and political issues. Arts as a resistance displays voices that are not necessary heard by the general public. For example, throughout our trip, we have met many female poets that write about women’s rights especially regarding the repeal the 8th movement.
As a human, we find fulfillment through community contributions by utilizing collaboration in order to widen the audience. Through mixed media, we are able to incorporate visuals along with words in order to make a piece that evokes a discussion with the audience.
